Gutai was an artist collective formed in 1954 by young avant-garde artists in the Kansai region under the leadership of Jiro Yoshihara.
With Yoshihara's motto, 'Don't imitate others. Create something that has never existed before,' the group continued to produce works with unconventional ideas.
Although the group disbanded in 1972 following the sudden passing of its leader, today, Gutai is internationally recognised as a pioneer in Japanese contemporary art.
A pivotal instance is the Gutai Bijyutau Matsuri performed in 1970 at the Osaka Expo, a performance passed down through the ages.
